Our
History

There were originally 16 rooms built by Royal and Margaret Batson in
1970. Their son, Ernest, built six additional units in 1972. Mrs. Batson
sold the property to P.V. Medlin in 1975. Jim Pope and Frankie Pope
purchased the 22 unit motel in March of 1981. The present owners
built the efficiency apartments in 1986. In 1996, they purchased the
adjacent Center Pier property from the Bame family. In July of 1997
the new oceanfront tower (pictured above) was opened.
The Chowder Company Restaurant and Tiki Bar opened in November of 1998.
Golden Sands now rests on the property that originally included the
Center Pier & Tackle Shop as well as the Center Pier Restaurant
which many people enjoyed for over forty years. Unfortunately, the
pier was lost in 1996 to Hurricane Fran. The resort-like area has now
been fully refurbished to meet the vacation needs of you and your
family, including fishing, swimming, outside dinning, gift shop and
nearby attractions for your enjoyment!
